Cut two horizontal pieces (top and bottom rails) to the gate width calculated in Step 1. Cut two vertical pieces (stiles) to the gate height.
Use pressure-treated lumber or naturally rot-resistant species like cedar. Avoid warped or twisted boards. Look for straight grain when selecting lumber at the store.
Lay the four frame pieces flat on a level surface. Apply exterior wood glue to each joint. Secure the corners with two 2½-inch exterior screws per joint.
Check that the frame is square by measuring both diagonals. They should be equal. If not, adjust the frame before the glue sets.
Attach L-shaped metal corner braces to all four inside corners with 1¼-inch screws. These reinforce the joints and prevent racking.

Wood gates sag over time. A diagonal brace prevents this.
Run a 2×4 diagonally from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner. This orientation transfers the weight of the free-swinging side back to the hinge post. Cutting the diagonal in the opposite direction will actually accelerate sagging.
Alternatively, install a turnbuckle anti-sag kit with a steel cable. These are adjustable and allow you to correct minor sagging later.
Measure the inside width of the frame. Space the balusters evenly with no gap wider than 4 inches (the code maximum).
Quick spacing formula: Divide the inside frame width by 5 inches (3.5 inches for a 2×2 baluster plus 1.5 inches for the gap). Round up to the nearest whole number. That is how many balusters you need. Then distribute the remaining space evenly.
Secure each baluster with two 1¼-inch screws at the top and two at the bottom. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting.

If using pressure-treated lumber, let it dry for 2–4 weeks before applying stain or paint. Freshly treated wood repels finishes.
Cedar and redwood can be stained immediately. Apply a UV-resistant exterior stain or paint to all surfaces, including cut ends. This protects against moisture, UV damage, and insect attack.
Composite alternative: If your deck uses composite railing, consider building the gate frame from pressure-treated lumber and cladding it with composite boards. Place the gate in the opening. Use scrap wood blocks underneath to set the correct bottom gap (2–4 inches above the deck surface). Center the gate in the opening with even clearance on both sides.
Decide which side gets the hinges. The gate should swing toward the deck, away from the stairs. If the stairs are on the right side, hinge on the left (and vice versa).
Position three hinges: one 6 inches from the top, one 6 inches from the bottom, and one centered between them. Mark the screw holes with a pencil.
Pre-drill pilot holes into both the gate frame and the post. Attach the hinges to the gate first using 1¼-inch screws. Then attach to the post using 2½-inch screws that reach into the solid post core.

Mount the latch on the opposite side from the hinges. For child safety, install the release mechanism at least 54 inches from the deck surface.

Remove the support blocks. Open and close the gate several times. Check that it swings freely without dragging on the deck surface. Verify that the latch catches securely every time.
